A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to be involved in the first ever Ottawa Kindness Week. For those of you who do not know, Kindness Week happens in Ottawa once a year (starting this year on Friday, February 12, 2010) where individuals and organizations come together to do ‘simple acts of kindness’. It doesn’t take much to make our city a kinder place to live.

One of the best ways to get involved in a cause is to find a way to link it to something you are passionate about. Kindness week is local, so I already love it, but here are some Kindness Food Tips to have you thinking about kindness while going about your foodie business!

1. Give a compliment about your waiter / waitress to his / her manager
2. Pay for the drinks of the next table beside you
3. Leave a copy of your favorite cook book on a train / bus with a note inside for the person that finds it
4. Let the person behind you in line at the grocery store go ahead of you
5. Put a note and a cookie on the desk of a co-worker letting them know they are doing a great job
6. One day at work and encourage everyone to bring in a nonperishable food item to donate to your local food bank or shelter
7. Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in line at your favorite coffee shop
8. Leave an extra big tip for your server
9. Drop off a box of muffins or cookies for the staff at a non-profit close to your heart
10. Take a friend out to dinner

Kindness is contagious – help me spread a little in Ottawa this week. Leave your ideas for a “random act of kindness’ in the comments section. Then, more importantly – go out and do one of them!
