I woke up this morning with a horrendous sore throat. Luckily there are plenty of household remedies for a sore throat… here are just a few I know of:

1. Tea, coffee or any hot liquid. Really, liquids in general are a very good idea when you have a sore throat. Just stay away from anything fizzy. One of the best is hot tea with a splash of lemon juice and a drop of honey. If you have a cold, coffee is a really good option. Try not to make it too strong, but the antioxidants found in coffee are great for soothing a sore throat. It will also give you a little boost of energy! Just don’t drink too much, it can act as a diuretic and dehydrate your body.

2. Warm water with salt. Not to drink! To gargle. Put in as much salt as will dissolve in the water, it should taste like the ocean. And have the water as hot as you can take. It kills bacteria your body may be producing and is also a really great remedy for any sores you get in your mouth.

3. Humidifiers. Nothing feels worse to a sore throat, especially one you are breathing from because your nose is blocked, than dry air. Try adding a few drops of eucalyptusΒ oil to the humidifier. Don’t have a humidifier? No problem, try boiling some water on your stove, or adding a can of water onto heat vents in the winter when the heat is on. That is, leaving the water in the can and setting the can on the vent… please don’t dump a can of water into your vent.Β Just having liquid out in a room will help as it evaporates.
