I’d like to thank Ryan from Apartment 613 for giving me some information about the ‘food deserts’ in Ottawa. Namely areas in our city where getting fresh fruit and veg in our city is difficult and expensive – especially in those times during the year when farmers markets are not running. Luckily there is an amazing non profit program known as the good food box. Anyone can sign up and receive a box of fresh healthy vegetables.

They come in 3 sizes and are delivered at different sites around the city once a month – there is sure to be one near you!

What comes in a box? Well this month mine included:

  • Cranberries
  • Green Peppers
  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Onions
  • Celery
  • Carrot
  • Cabbage
  • Mushrooms
  • Lettuce
  • A Pumpkin

So far I’ve made an apple cranberry crisp… yummy and fall like with a recipe to come next week. I’ve used the peppers, onions and mushrooms in a fried potato cake with an egg on top. Again, recipe to come next week.
