Three days left before one of the best foodie events returns to the city! The Red and White is a great night of food and drink for a wonderful cause.

First a little bit about the cause. Harmony House is a second stage women’s shelter here in Ottawa. One of only 2 in the province.

How does a second stage shelter differ from a regular women’s shelter? A second stage shelter is one that you go to for longer term help. The women who are there can stay with their children for up to one year. In that time they have access to a wealth of programs that can help with school, finding a job and overcoming violence in their past. They even have a food bank program that is open to current and past residents for as long as they need.

For a time I volunteered at Harmony House and had the opportunity to meet the women who run and use the shelter services. These are amazing women. All of them. The kindness and dedication that they each have to improving their lives and the lives of their children, or the lives of those at Harmony House is nothing short of inspiring. And the kids… to have gone through the violence, fear and hardships that some of them have, and still be so positive it is heart warming to say the least.
